Runners from around the world cover approximately 200 kilometers of exotic and wild Costa Rican mountainous regions and rugged coastline. For six days, runners embrace the spirit of adventure, discovery and camaraderie within a long distance running competition while navigating wide river crossings, rainforests, jungles, windswept highlands, beaches and rock outcroppings. It is an expedition run of epic proportions introducing competitors to the hospitality of the local Tico culture while pushing the limits of their will and endurance.

Route of Fire

Rounding out the top five finishers of stage one are Ty Stevens (USA),Victor Zuniga (CRC) and Mark Lattanzi (USA) with finishing times of 03:02:00, 03:14:10 and 03:14:32, respectively.

Top five overall times for stage two of The Coastal Challenge: Cesar Ortega (CRC) 6:27:08, Javier Montero (CRC) 6:38:03, Ty Stevens (USA) 7:33:33, Mark Lattanzi (USA) 8:45:40 and Judith Abbot (CANADA) 9:02:25.

Stage 3 update : Tierras Morenas – Cuipilapa (32.9km) : Right now Javier Montero and Cesar Ortega (CRC) are half way done, Mark Lattanzi (USA) is 3rd, 2.5 min ahead of Ty Stevens (USA)…TCC is entering the dry stages of the race, but we still have some spray rain coming down from the near mountains. Today’s stage has …a lot of dirt roads and is shorter, wich is letting the sprinters demonstrate their speed abilities.

Stage 3 update : Preliminar leaderboard >> 1st : Javier Montero (CRC) > 03:08:30 // 2nd : Cesar Ortega (CRC) > 03:08:41 // 3rd : Ty Stevens (USA) > 03:37:47 // 4th Mark Lattanzi (USA) > 3:38:18

Get Ready for Stage 4: Today they go straight UP a very steep long ascent for the first miles and then it is a rocky downhill into a rolling beautiful fast route that dumps them into a roaring stream that they have to literally swim, run and rock hop where they finish at one of the most scenic waterfalls (wait for the pictures!!!!) in Costa Rica…

Mark is doing good, he was not too happy about a segment of paved road that racers had to go on when crossing from one overland to the other, that delayed him a bit. It’s his B-Day today!

Stage 5: Everybody is at campsite in Curubande right now, where is hot and sunny (around 32 Celsius), racers must rest trough the afternoon and prepare for the las two stages : The Coast.. now they’ll get more downhill roads…. and beach…

Report from Junquillal Bay beach : IS REALLY HOT AROUND HERE ! Sun is really heavy right now, racers are going downhill after PC #1Los Indios (5,8 km), they got the opportunity of doing an extra climb to reach the summit of this last mountain ;) Now they’re heading to the coastal trails and the beach..!

Stage 6: Junquillal Beach – Bolanos Bay a 22k Run then the party begins.
